What Does Cancer Antigen 125 Mean?
Cancer antigen 125 is abbreviated as CA125, which belongs to carbohydrate antigen, and its clinical reference value of <35,000 U/L is considered normal. It also exists in fetal coelom epithelial secretions, amniotic fluid, the fallopian tube, uterus, and endocervix in adults, seen in the first three months of pregnancy, or other diseases. It is more common in ovarian-related cancer, but the increase is not necessarily a tumor.
1. Cancer antigen 125 can diagnose ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer has specific clinical value, especially for observing the curative effect and judging recurrence. The serum cancer antigen 125 marker of patients with ovarian epithelial cancer is significantly increased, reaching several times the average value. The sensitivity of early diagnosis can be 50%-90%. At the same time, cancer antigen 125 mainly exists in ovarian cancer tissue cells.
2. Cancer antigen 125 can judge whether the tumor is benign or malignant
3%-6% of benign ovarian and uterine tumors can also significantly increase cancer antigen 125. Still, it is usually limited to less than 100,000 U/L, common in ovarian epithelial tumors, teratoma, uterine fibroids, and so on.
3. Cancer antigen 125 can identify the nature of the mass
Cancer antigen 125 can also identify pelvic tumors and masses, especially for postmenopausal women, to determine ovarian masses and cancer. Cervical cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, biliary tract cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, and other gastrointestinal malignancies also have specific positive reactions.
4. Other uses of cancer antigen 125
It is known that the cancer antigen 125 is significantly increased in decompensated liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and other diseases, but the increase is usually less than 100,000 U/L. Mild elevations of cancer antigen 125 may also occur in acute and chronic pancreatitis, benign gastrointestinal illness, endometriosis, other diseases, or pregnancy.
In addition, it is recommended that patients be combined with other laboratory tests, CT, ultrasound, and other imaging tests to confirm the disease and a tumor biopsy should be performed if necessary. At the same time, maintain a good attitude to face the condition, and cooperate with doctors to actively treat and prevent a recurrence.
